"A Reader's Hebrew and Greek Bible" is a user-friendly, reader-friendly volume. It has compiled the older "A Reader's Hebrew Bible" and "A Reader's Greek New Testament" into a single, leather-bound collection. The format is the same, which means that there are almost no textual-critical notes, but instead at the bottom of each page there are lexical entries. For the Hebrew Scriptures the words used less than 100 times are defined, and in the Greek New Testament words used less than 30 times are expressed. There is also a glossary at the end of Greek New Testament and the Hebrew Scriptures for the more frequently used words. The text is clean and easy on the eyes. The lexical notes at the bottom can be almost visually overpowering at first (definitions upon definitions). But if a reader will patiently practice using the annotations it becomes less confusing, and reading the text becomes more manageable. The size of the bound manuscript is a bit bulky. But it's worth the trade-off (bigger volume, larger print, etc.).Since receiving my copy this last Christmas, I have enjoyed using my edition daily in morning devotions. I find my copy inviting, and this has helped me to get back into the original languages. This would be a perfect gift for your favorite seminarian, pastor, or Bible scholar. I gladly recommend this edition!
This is a GREAT tool for anyone learning Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. The Hebrew text font is large (much larger than the Greek) but that's useful because of the way the Hebrew vowel system works. I have been reading Psalms every morning in the Hebrew and the way they present the "less common" words (I believe it is 100 occurrences or less) is awesome! It's really limited my need to have a lexicon on me. I look forward to using the Greek New Testament (I believe it's a variant of the UBS) as I learn Greek, as well. The Bible is pretty big (about the size of a big study bible), but that is necessary. The reason is the definition sections at the bottom of the Bible that gives definitions for any words that occur 100 times or less. This is so useful! The black bonded leather feels nice. The binding is sturdy. Having two ribbons is also very handy.Overall, this has been a blessing to my continued practice of the Biblical languages. I look forward to using it many more years to come.
I think whoever designed this has had the experience of learning to read the Hebrew Bible as an adult or at least well understands what it is like. The Hebrew text appears on each page with all the hard words listed at the bottom of the page. This is exactly what the new reader needs. Doing a Hebrew course will acquaint the student with many words but of course there are many others which have to be looked up - this is where this book is so well designed with the hard words on each page so one doesn't have to look them up. Today I read Deuteronomy 16 and there were some new words there, I try to read 1 chapter a day or perhaps half a chapter a day, there are almost always new words. I certainly recommend this volume to those who wish to read the Bible in the original languages.
I bought this Bible for use after I completed my Greek course. The footnotes with the translations confuse me sometimes because I am accustomed to glancing while reading a study Bible. That is my own fault though, not the book's. Just be aware. The font itself is thin and difficult for me which is why i rated it 4/5, but other than that it is a good copy.
As a student of Greek and Hebrew, I appreciate all the work that went into this Bible. It's nearly impossible to find a Greek/Hebrew Bible, and this one is very nice. It has plenty of glosses for lesser used words in the footnotes. More common words can be found in the short lexicons at the end of each testament. The price is very reasonable for this fine volume. This is not an interlinear and it does not have an English translation. If you have trouble translating on the fly, grab one of the pew BiblesThe type size is perfect for the vowel marks in Hebrew. making them discernable. The Hebrew text has proper names in gray rather than black, which is helpful because it makes them identifiable as names rather than vocabulary words with no gloss. The leather cover is a bit stiff, but it seems very rugged. Nothing to worry about. It will probably relax with use. Calf skin would have been great, but that would have jacked up the price. The paper is Bible quality and has a silver edge.It looks classy, and I wish they had this available 20 years ago.
This was exactly what I've wanted for some years but didn't know about. If anything the definitions in the footnotes make it even better. I know I'll get years of good service from this edition of the Bible so I am very satisfied with it .I would recommend it in a heartbeat to any student of the Bible who is also a student of the Bible's languages as well.
